MEDIA RELEASE: Regional Innovation Week – Science key in delivery of 1000 innovation jobs in the Bega Valley

Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery CentreScience and innovation go hand in hand, which is why the Sapphire Coast Science Hub is central to Regional Innovation Week.

Some make the mistake to defining “innovation” with a narrow focus around software development and mobile technology.

The full innovation picture is on show in the Bega Valley between April 27 and May 3, with science and engineering side by side with information technology as key parts of our growing community of local innovators.

Liam O’Duibhir is the co-founder of 2pi Software and Into IT Sapphire Coast and plugged himself into the existing scientific community when establishing his innovation business in 2009.

“We have a dynamic science network at play in this region, attracted by a mix of coastal and alpine environments to work and play in,” he says.

“The bonus is that these are people keen to grow and develop that network, country generosity in action.”

Outside of the local natural environment, science opportunities also exist within Bega Valley Shire Council, various State and Federal Government agencies, a mix of public and independent primary and high schools, the Bega and Batemans Bay Campus’ of the University of Wollongong and the State’s newest health care facility – the South East Regional Hospital in Bega.

Regional Innovation Week extends the reach of the Sapphire Coast Science Hub and puts on show the community already at play through The Atlas of Life in the Coastal Wilderness, The Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre in Eden, Bournda Environment Education Centre and the Panboola Wetlands Trust at Pambula.

Adding significant weight to that local presence is the backing of Inspiring Australia, part of the Australian Government’s promotion of public participation in science, technology and innovation.

Over the last four years Inspiring Australia has supported the Sapphire Coast Science Hub to deliver exceptional science based events in the community including the Sapphire Coast Science Festival during National Science Week in August.

These people and their passion are key in delivering 1000 innovation jobs in the Bega Valley by 2030.

This will be a place where local kids with a flare and skill for science can dream of a locally basedcareer. Regional Innovation Week April 27 – May 3 in and around Merimbula and Bega is part of making that happen.
